Notes

This photo on this cover is a highly stylized version of Edward Curtis’ original photograph, Travaux – Piegan; the original was made around 1900, and published in volume 6 of Curtis’ 20 volume magnum opus, The North American Indian in 1911. The book cover version has been posterized, and a mountain range has been added to the background. To see the difference, the original image can be viewed HERE, in the collection of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth Texas.

The Piegan were a large tribe, part of the Blackfeet Confederacy; their territory ran from Montana to northern Saskatchewan in Canada.

Traveaux refers to the long wooden crossed poles, used to transport belongings.
